Friday poem: Setting Sail

This poem captures the excitement of heading out to sea and the feeling of being released from land, particularly for someone who’s not accustomed to the space of the ocean.

Setting Sail – Emily Dickinson

7.

Exultation is the going
Of an inland soul to sea, —
Past the houses, past the headlands,
Into deep eternity!

Bred as we, among the mountains,
Can the sailor understand
The divine intoxication
Of the first league out from land?
