The CMA CGM Alexander von Humboldt in the Strait of Gubal

Liveaboard life: Crossing the Red Sea

Some of the dive sites we visited on our Egypt liveaboard trip were off the tip of the Sinai Peninsula, which is that pointy piece of Egypt that separates the two forks at the top of the Red Sea: the Gulf of Suez and the Gulf of Aqaba. In order to get from Hurghada to that area, we had to cross the Gulf of Suez, which looks like a small thing to do on a map. It was not. It was rough and the boat rolled more than I thought a boat could!

Here’s a video Tony took from the bow of our boat:

While crossing to the Sinai Peninsula, we encountered one of the world’s largest container ships en route to the Suez Canal. The CMA CGM Alexander von Humboldt is 395 metres long and 54 metres wide. She is a 16,000 TEU vessel and is absolutely spectacularShe is one of the world’s largest container ships. She was launched in April 2013.

When she was passing I was taking a nap; Tony flung open our cabin door and insisted that I look. I didn’t even need to get off the bed – she was close enough that I felt as though she was about to ride straight over our tiny 39 metre vessel.
