A Day on the Bay: Snoek run off Hout Bay

Approaching Hout Bay over Chapmans Peak

The peaceful appearance of Hout Bay as I approached over Chapmans Peak drive for a day of diving was deceptive. When we arrived there, we found the parking area wall to wall with tow vehicles and trailers: huge ones for commercial fishing boats, and smaller ones belonging to recreational fishermen. They’d all set out to sea really early in the morning to fish themselves silly on a run of snoek just off Kommetjie, south of Hout Bay.

We squeezed into a parking space and kitted up to dive. After our second dive we just made it out of there before chaos broke loose, with boats parked on the slipway, fishermen cleaning gear and fish all over the place, and fruity language like you have never heard in your wildest imaginings.
